COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
Level 7A is an Advanced level class.
Class Description: Students will improve their ability to listen to and comprehend authentic materials, develop fluency and variety in their speaking ability, and increase their English vocabulary. Students will develop their ability to use English for more complex tasks than basic conversation such as: presentations, debate, analysis, comparison, evaluation, research, critique and distinguishing shades of meaning. Through written assignments and the class reader, students will also improve their reading and writing skills. Throughout the course, students will deepen their knowledge of American culture.
Expected Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, successful students will have demonstrated in exercises, tests, writing assignments, and discussions the ability to:
· Separate fact from myth,
· Analyze and discuss different opinions,
· Frame arguments,
· Tell and encourage others to tell an anecdote,
· Interpret a cartoon,
· Gather background information,
· Recognize and use figurative language,
· Use direct and indirect speech when re-telling a story,
· Respond appropriately to complex and controversial questions,
· Identify and use paraphrases and synonyms,
· Paraphrase and react to quotes,
· Discuss proposals,
· Discuss experiments and studies,
· Role play scripted and semi-scripted conversations,
· Prepare and make a presentation to the class, and
· Read and discuss a full-length, authentic American novel.
Reading and writing assignments are important parts of the class. Students will read and discuss a full-length novel in English and prepare a class presentation.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING
Students will be graded on four criteria:
PARTICIPATION: Participation is expected in all class discussions and exercises. Failure to participate will result in a low grade. Participation includes taking part in pair and group activities, class discussions, and projects.
FLUENCY: The fluency grade will be based on the following factors: Use of ‘English only’; use of target grammar and vocabulary; pronunciation and intonation; ability to express ideas and understand class discussion.
HOMEWORK: Daily homework will be given and should be completed before class time the following day. Students are expected to complete all assigned material by the due date.
TESTS: Students are required to take several tests and a final exam. Students who miss a test will not be able to make up the test later.
